The change: anything that takes under two minutes and would otherwise sit waiting for me in the morning gets done the night before.

That is the entire intervention. It sounds too small to matter. Thirty days in, it was the single highest return adjustment I have made to a daily routine.

What it actually covers

  • Dishes in the sink
  • Tomorrow's clothes
  • The bag by the door
  • Coffee set up to the point of pressing one button

Individually, none of these take meaningful time. Collectively they are the difference between a morning that starts with decisions and a morning that starts with momentum.

Why it works as a habit, not a willpower fix

Morning friction is not about minutes, it is about decision load. Every small unresolved thing waiting for you is a decision you have to make before you are properly awake, and decisions made in that state tend to be worse and to cost more than they should.

Moving those decisions to the previous evening puts them in a window where you are already in motion and the marginal cost of one more two minute task is close to zero.

The honest limitation

It fails on the evenings you are genuinely exhausted, which are exactly the evenings before the mornings that most need help. The fix is to shrink the list rather than abandon it: on a bad night, the bag by the door alone still pays for itself.
