For Christmas delivery in 2026, carriers publish a last recommended day to ship, and the earliest ones land in mid December. As of late October, USPS lists Ground Advantage at December 17 for the lower 48 states. Dates differ by service, so confirm on the carrier's own page.
Key takeaways
- Last ship dates are recommendations, not guarantees.
- Your own deadline is earlier: stores need time to pack and hand off.
- Decide your plan B (store pickup or a gift card) by early December.
The carrier dates, as published when we checked
- USPS (lower 48, announced September 22). Ground Advantage and First Class Mail: December 17. Priority Mail: December 18. Priority Mail Express: December 19.
- FedEx (for December 24 delivery). Ground Economy: December 15. Ground and Home Delivery: from December 17 to 21, by transit time. 2Day: December 22. Overnight services: December 23.
- UPS. When we checked, UPS had not posted its 2026 last days to ship. Look at ups.com for the dates.
These came from carrier announcements as reported by shipping trade sites. Check the carrier site before you rely on one.
How to plan backward
- Pick a personal deadline. Choose a date at least a week before the carrier cutoff. For a December 17 cutoff, aim to order by December 8.
- Read the "arrives by" date at checkout. Look for the promised date on the store page, not the cart.
- Use cheaper options early. Ground services cost less than air. Ship early and you may not need the upgrade. See our Black Friday price plan to cap your total.
- Ship to the person who will be home. A gift sent to an empty house can sit on a porch. Send it to a work address or a pickup point if that is safer.
- Check the return window before you buy. Our holiday return policies guide explains what to look for.
- Be careful with delivery texts. A text about a missed delivery can be a scam. Go to the carrier's site yourself and type in your tracking number. See the holiday shopping scam checks.
- Choose a plan B. Store pickup, local delivery, or a gift card by email can save a late gift.
Why the real deadline is earlier
The carrier date is for a package handed over to them. Before that, the store has to process, pack and release your order. A busy week can add days. That is why your own deadline should sit well before the carrier date.
Three things can push a package past it:
- Weather and volume. December is the busiest stretch of the year for carriers, so delays are more likely.
- Address errors. A missing apartment number can send a parcel back.
- Split orders. One order can ship in two boxes from two places. Read the tracking for each.
If a gift is still not shipped by your date, switch to plan B right away instead of hoping.
Sending to another state or country
Shipping to a distant address adds days. International and military mail have their own, earlier cutoffs, and USPS said its full list would come out in mid October. Check the carrier page for your destination, then count back from there. When in doubt, send a week earlier than you think you need.
