Free Cancellation Deadlines: How Not to Miss the Cutoff

Free cancellation ends at a date and a time. Here is how to find it and act first.

"Free cancellation" does not mean free forever. It ends at a specific date and time, and after that the hotel can keep your money. The fix is small: find the cutoff the day you book, and put it in a reminder.

Key takeaways

  • Free cancellation has a deadline. Read it on your confirmation, not on the search page.
  • Set two reminders: three days before the cutoff, and the morning of it.
  • A free cancel booking is also a free option to rebook if the price drops.

Find the real cutoff in 5 minutes

  1. Open the confirmation email, not the listing. The listing can change. The confirmation shows the terms you agreed to.
  2. Write down the date and the time. Many properties count the cutoff in their own local time. A 6 PM cutoff in another time zone can pass while it is still afternoon at home.
  3. Check what kind of rate you booked. "Free cancellation" and "pay at the property" are different things. A rate can also be partly refundable, with a fee after the cutoff. Look for the word "non refundable" anywhere in the terms.
  4. Note where you booked. If you booked through a travel site, cancel there. Cancelling with the hotel directly may not release the booking.
  5. Check for a card hold. Some bookings hold or charge a deposit. Look at your card statement after you book so a charge does not surprise you later.

Set two reminders

A single reminder on the cutoff day is too late. Use two:

  • Three days before: decide if you are still going. Check prices again.
  • The morning of the cutoff: cancel, or keep the booking on purpose.

Add the date to Nusafa and it will remind you with time left to act.

Use free cancellation as a price check

Prices move. If a booking is free to cancel, you can recheck the rate before the cutoff. If it dropped, book the cheaper one first, then cancel the old one. Do it in that order so you never have a gap. Read the new booking's terms before you cancel the old one, because the new rate may be stricter.

What to do when you cancel

  1. Cancel in writing or through the booking page, not only by phone.
  2. Save the cancellation email or the confirmation number.
  3. Watch your card for the refund. Timing varies, so ask how long it takes.
  4. If the refund does not arrive, send the confirmation to the site or hotel.

A note on flights

For flights, U.S. Department of Transportation rules generally let you cancel within 24 hours of booking without a fee if you booked at least seven days before departure. Check the airline's own terms, because they can offer more. Our guide to what airlines owe you when a flight is delayed or cancelled covers the rest.

Your quick checklist

  • [ ] Open each upcoming booking and write down the cutoff date and time.
  • [ ] Check the time zone of that time.
  • [ ] Add two reminders per booking.
  • [ ] Recheck the price once before each cutoff.
  • [ ] Save every cancellation confirmation.

Next step

Pick your next trip and find the cutoff today. Then add it to Nusafa so the reminder arrives while you can still act. Related: hotel resort fees and the real nightly price shows what to check before you book, and the travel insurance decision covers trips that cannot be cancelled for free.

This is general information. Cancellation terms differ by property, rate and booking site, so check your own confirmation.
